Sedgwick County Project SEARCH
KanCare is Kansas Medicaid. This is a program that provides health care coverage for low income people who also fall into one of the following categories:
Disabled (for those determined disabled by Social Security)
Over the age of 64
Under the age of 19
Pregnant Caregiver/parent to a child under the age of 19
KanCare is beneficial for Project SEARCH interns who need health insurance. It is most useful to interns who also need some help with activities of daily living (like cooking, bathing, shopping, or managing your money). These additional help services are provided through either the Intellectual/Developmental Disability (I/DD) Waiver Program or through the combination of the Working Healthy/WORK Programs.
A fairly comprehensive fact sheet about the waiver can be found here.
A PowerPoint presentation about these programs (with some really useful information) can be found here.
Every case is different so there is no fool proof way of determining eligibility other than by applying. However, to get a rough idea of if you might qualify, you can take the eligibility checker quiz here.
A documentation checklist can be found here.
If you apply online, you can just scan the documents and attach them with your application. Otherwise it is recommended that you make photo copies and send them in with your paper application (original forms of paperwork will not be returned).
The KanCare Ombudsman's Office is a fantastic resource that offers free help with any KanCare related issue. You can call and leave a message (they will return your call) at 1-855-643-8180 or you can email them at KanCare.Ombudsman@ks.gov.
A complete checklist of steps can be found here.
